PANAMA
There is a high mountain in Panama that is regarded as the "cradle" of specialty coffee, that is the Baru Volcano. It is 3,475 meters above sea level and is a dormant volcano formed many years ago.
In the valley area between 1,000 and 2,000 meters below the volcano, there is a lush primeval forest with a cool temperate climate formed by altitude and longitude and latitude. Different small valleys have different microclimates. Under the influence of the Caribbean and Pacific winds, there is sufficient rainfall here to nourish the forest and replenish enough water for the river. The volcanic soil left by the volcanic eruption is rich in minerals and is a fertile soil favored by crops.
The Boquete District, the Highlands (including Volcan), and the Renacimiento District of Chiriqui Province in this primeval forest are ideal Panama specialty coffee regions. The Boquete District is located on the east side of the Baru Volcano; the Highlands are located on the west side; the Renacimiento District is located on the west side of the Highlands, bordering Costa Rica.
This coffee region is scattered with world-renowned coffee estates, such as the Janson Estate, the Altieri Estate, and so on. Most coffee farms are SCAP members, producing high-quality coffee every year and participating in the Best of Panama (BoP) competition organized by SCAP, competing to become the best Panama coffee every year
SCAP was founded in 1997. The association has grown from the original 7 founding members to more than 50 members now. It is now also realizing the original founding concept: uniting to fight against the low coffee prices at the time and promoting Panama's specialty coffee to the world.
