HONDURAS
Honduras is the Treasure coffee region introduced in 2024. In June 2024, we made a special trip to Santa Barbara Province, the COE winning region in Honduras, and also went to Comayagua Province to uncover the true situation of Honduras coffee regions.
The coffee region of Santa Barbara Province is close to Santa Barbara Mountains National Park and Lake Yojoa. Shade measures are implemented in coffee planting. These characteristics together create an ideal and unique high-quality coffee growing environment. When browsing the list of winners of the COE competition in previous years, Santa Barbara Province won 24 places including the first and second place in the 2024 COE competition, which is a veritable cradle of awards!
When we arrived in Santa Barbara Province in June, we deliberately observed the terroir here: the Honduran coffee region is generally short of water, and even the soil is mostly rocky and less soil, which is not conducive to the growth of coffee trees. However, the climate in Santa Barbara is very cool and humid, and the abundant water system can also gather into the Yojoa Lake covering an area of 90 square kilometers!
In the Santa Barbara region of Honduras, we cupped more than 80 coffees from morning to night; together with the cupping in the Comayagua region, the total number exceeded 100! All these efforts are to pursue high-quality Honduran coffee. After multiple rounds of cupping in the region, we found many high-quality coffees from this region and officially introduced the Honduran coffee!
Parainema coffee variety is a variety developed by IHCAFE specifically for the El Paraiso region. Because the high rainfall and clay soil in the region are prone to nematodes (Nematodo) corroding the roots of coffee trees, IHCAFE cultivated Parainema, a nematode-resistant coffee variety for coffee farmers to grow. The name Parainema is a combination of Paraiso and Nematodo.
In addition, Parainema is resistant to leaf rust and has high yields. It has a unique fruity aroma and won the championship in COE in 2017. In COE in 2024, it won 22nd, 26th, 27th, and 29th place, which is better than some Geisha lots!
